BORDEAUX CITY & WINE CYCLING TOURS

One of Europe’s most cycle-friendly cities, pedal between the impressive architecture, historical landmarks and wine bars on a Bordeaux cycling holiday. There are stunning Gothic and neoclassical buildings including the Grosse Cloche, Palais Rohan and Bordeaux National Opera. Don’t miss the modern masterpiece, the Cité du Vin museum, with its aluminium exteriors that mirror a swirling wine glass.

Oenophiles can cycle between some of the best vineyards in France on our self guided bike tours in Bordeaux. Taste world-class red wine in Saint-Émilion, sweet white wine in Sauternes and dry white wines in Entre Deux Mers. The best time to visit the wineries are between the months of May to early September, before the Autumn harvest. Pair a visit to the vineyards with a trip to Arcachon, famous for its oyster production on your bike tour. The oysters are perfectly complemented with a Sauvignon Blanc from the Bordeaux region.

Things to Do in Bordeaux

Food and wine on a Bordeaux cycling holiday

Food & Wine

Renowned for its fine wines and known as the wine capital of the world, the region has 7,000 wineries with 90% of them producing a Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon blend. The region does also produce both sweet and dry white wine, albeit in smaller quantities. Once a popular beachside retreat for wealthy Parisians in the 19th and 20th centuries, cycle along Arcachon’s bay where the 26 oyster farms produce 10,000 tonnes of oysters each year. Then pick up picnic supplies at the morning market each Tuesday to Friday in Place Abel Surchamp and Rue Montesquieu.

Historical Sights

An amazing 1,810 hectares of Bordeaux has UNESCO status. Cycle along the wide boulevards and past the neoclassical architecture in this bike-friendly city. Once a Benedictine monastery that was an important stop for pilgrims, the Romanesque Abbey de la Sauve-Majeure was repurposed as a prison during the French Revolution. Carved out of the hillside in the 12th century and painted in the 14th, the Saint-Émilion monolithic church’s three naves sit beneath a 68m bell tower. Take a break from cycling to climb to the top for endless views of the countryside and grapevines.
