WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN CYCLING IN PIEDMONT

One of Italy’s most elegant regions, Piedmont boasts fantastic scenery and delicious wines. Vineyards lace across the region, benefiting from the temperate climate created by the Alps which cradle Piedmont. Barbaresco wines, made from Nebbiolo grapes, alongside Barolo varieties are a delicious treat after an exciting day exploring the region on a cycling holiday in Italy. Delight in the notes of cherries and truffles as well as the aroma of roses from this acclaimed wine.

Home to historic towns and cities, the idea of a unified Italy started successfully in Piedmont, when the Savoyard King united the Italians. Towns like Turin and Alba showcase the ancient and proud history of the region. Lying along the French border, you’ll also notice the French influence here, most apparent in the cuisine; unlike the majority of Italian regions, Piedmont places more importance on appetisers, much like in France, and butter is used more commonly than olive oil.

Things to do in Piedmont

Piedmont - Elegant Wines

Elegant Wines

The excellent conditions in Piedmont means vines thrive here, with fantastic wineries particularly around Alba. There are two major wines produced: Barolo and Barbaresco. Stored until they’re perfect, a sip of these wines is comparable to drinking luxurious velvet thanks to the high tannin, often appearing a rust-red colour. The longer they’re aged, these reds take on a brown hue alongside a deeper flavour. Similar to the style of winemaking in Burgundy, expect sumptuous wines that pair perfectly with local, elegant dishes.

Truffle Treats

Piedmont is a hidden gem for foodies. White truffles and hazelnuts are found throughout the region, meaning the dishes are often aromatic and earthy – as well as

utterly delicious. The French influence has meant the region boasts many elegant appetisers – contrasting to the cuisine found elsewhere in Italy. One of the typical dishes of Piedmont, and a favourite of past royalty, is Tagliolini. A type of ribbon pasta, you’ll often find it wrapped beneath a creamy truffle sauce, delectable with every bite.
