WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN ON OUR CYCLING HOLIDAYS IN PORTUGAL

Portugal is best known for its naturally beautiful coasts and gorgeous wines produced from the vines here. However, the country has so much more for you to experience. When on cycling holidays in Portugal, bask in not only the warm sunlight, but also the warm and friendly culture you can’t help but fall in love with.

The environment in Portugal is beautifully varied. The Douro Valley in the north is a breathtaking lattice-work of vineyards that the River Douro snakes through. And along the coast, the ocean has carved out dramatic rock features that lie next to idyllic fishing villages. Another major difference is in the environments found in the north versus the south of the country; northern Portugal is more lush with a cooler climate, whilst the south is more classically ‘Mediterranean’, with olive groves and a drier climate.

Portugal can be visited any time of year, and each season brings something different. Spring and autumn have generally milder temperatures and in the summer, there’s almost guaranteed sunshine. It can get quite hot in July and August, so cycling with earlier starts and mid-day breaks is best.

Cycling in Portugal

Cycling in Portugal is a wonderful and leisurely experience thanks to the quiet rural lanes that run through the country. There’s always a beautiful vista when pedalling here, whether it’s the old city of Porto or the vineyard terraces of the Douro Valley. After a leisurely ride, stop off for a coffee and a pastel de nata under the glorious Portuguese sun.

Freshest food on a Portugal cycling holiday

Port and Pastel de Nata

The Portuguese cuisine is all about bringing out the natural flavours of the dish, utilising lemon, garlic and coriander to lightly flavour the delicious produce. In recent times, pastel de nata have become a global sensation but the very best can be found in the small cafes of country they come from. Portugal has some of the best wines in Europe, that are underrated. The various wine regions throughout the country produce a huge variety of wines, from the vinho verdes of the north to the rich Port of the Douro Valley.

Douro Valley

One of the most famous wine regions in Europe, the Douro Valley produces truly delicious wines; the most famous of which is Port. This rich drink is a burst of flavour with every sip, and the Douro’s premier export. In the valley, you’ll discover charming towns with beautiful architecture, and tiles everywhere you look. Originally designed to keep the streets and houses cool from the sun, the tiles have since become decorative features used to express creativity and artistry.
