WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN CYCLING IN THE DORDOGNE

One of the most exquisite regions in France, the Dordogne is enigmatic, beautiful, and above all a gastronomic adventure. This southern region boasts fantastic food and wine, with distinct flavours found throughout. One of the most interesting parts of the Dordogne is the way it’s divided into four corners called Périgords, each known for a unique culinary delight.

The Périgord Vert takes its name from the verdant valleys and lush scenery. The Périgord Blanc is where you can find the dramatic limestone cliffs and breathtaking towns often seen on postcards. Périgord Pourpe creates some of the most delicious wines in France, waiting for you to discover them. In the Périgord Noir, ancient forests create a mysterious and enchanting environment.

On a cycling holiday in the Dordogne, embark on a leisurely adventure like no other, visiting stunning towns like Sarlat where history comes to life. Pedalling here is fantastic, as you’re constantly greeted with amazing sights.

Things to do in the Dordogne

Shaded forest cycling trail in the Dordogne, perfect for truffle trails.

Truffle Trails

In the Périgord Noir corner of the region, the oak and pine forests create the perfect environment for black truffles. Whether you’re hunting for them yourselves, or simply enjoy the elegant flavour it brings to every meal, the region is renowned for these nuggets of gold. Many of the dishes here are built around celebrating truffles, and the wine has evolved to pair perfectly with these. You’ll even find truffles in the patisseries and wine shops, baked into breads and stamped into butter and oil – these make fantastic gifts for friends and family back home.

Enchanting Towns

Hidden in the Dordogne region are some of France’s most enchanting towns. Impossibly scenic, some of these towns sit against striking limestone cliffs, are hidden by oak and

pine forests, or lie above a sea of vineyards. The most beautiful however is Rocamadour, built beneath a shining white cliff. As the river bends to meet the town, the scene is something out of a fairytale. Explore its medieval streets lined with flowers and browse the rows of boutiques and cafes, filled with gifts and treats.

The Dordogne is one of our favourite regions in the south of France. The food and wine here is second to none, and the cycle paths make exploring the region a dream. When in Sarlat, be sure to look out for the truffle goods they sell in many of the markets.
