WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN CYCLING IN SICILY

Sicily is an enchanting place for an Italy cycling holiday. Explore glistening seas, ancient architecture, picturesque cycling routes, and an immeasurable amount of charm. Let this Mediterranean island enchant you as you pedal between quaint fishing villages and towns from antiquity. En route, stop off at authentic trattorias and enjoy a taste of the Sicilian way of life. The cuisine here is a wonderful blend of its history, combining the very best of Italian, Greek, Arabic and Spanish influences; the best way to immerse yourself in the region is also the tastiest way.

The history of the island features countless peoples and cultures that have left their marks in unique ways. The ancient Greeks were the first and built elegant temples, bringing a love for seafood. The Arabs brought citrus fruits, almonds, sugar and spices that enriched the food. The Spanish built exquisite Baroque buildings and introduced Sicily to ingredients from the New World, including the beloved tomato and courgette – or zucchini.

Things to do in Sicily

Tales of Antiquity

Sicily has a fascinating past, and buildings have been meticulously preserved from each of its eras. Amphitheatres, ancient harbours, and sacred temples can be seen across the Sicilian landscape – relics from the Greek and Roman eras. In Siracusa, the original historic centre can still be seen on Ortygia, a small island with countless landmarks surrounded by myths. Nearby in the Parco Archeologico della Neapolis, gaze upon the beautiful amphitheatre with sweeping views of Siracusa.

Sicily - Sicilian Spice

Sicilian Spice

The history of Sicily has also shaped its cuisine. Thanks to the many cultures that have called this island home, the food is wonderfully varied. Flavours and traditions that are rarely seen on the mainland thrive here. Ingredients like couscous, saffron and rice were

brought during the island’s Arabic era 1,000 years ago. Even older, the love of seafood on the island is thanks to the Greek settlers almost 3,000 years ago. Traditional restaurants and cafes across the island still use authentic methods developed over centuries to make beloved dishes like arancini and cassata.
