WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN CYCLING IN THE ALGARVE

Portugal’s southernmost region, the Algarve is renowned for its golden coast, windswept landscape, and simple charm, the perfect scene for a cycling holiday in Portugal. The pace of life here encourages you to stop and take it all in, with authentic fishing villages and ancient towns around every corner. In the west, experience a side to the region many never discover where the sun sets over breathtaking coves. The east of the region offers cultural sights and rich history whilst the coast connecting the two sides can only be described as golden.

In the Algarve you’ll experience the freshest seafood in Europe. Sardines, sea bass, prawns, octopus, clams and so much more are just some of the dishes to expect. The Algarvians value freshness above all over flavours, using lemon, salt, garlic and a sprinkle of coriander to bring their dishes to life. Fig trees and almond orchards also mean a touch of sweetness can always be found on the menu. After an al fresco dinner, take a stroll through the tiled towns, basking in the warm glow of the sunset with an ice cream in hand.

Things to do in the Algarve

Dramatic Coves

One of the most recognisable features of the Algarve is its dramatic coastline. The strong Atlantic has carved breathtaking sculptures of natural art into the rocks, where sea arches and cliffs hide secret grottos. This region has some of the most fantastic sunsets in Europe, thanks to the ocean to its south and west. This means the cliffs are painted pink and gold each evening – the perfect time for a stroll on the quiet beaches. To fully experience the caves and sea arches, a boat trip with a local guide is a fantastic choice.

Sardine Celebrations

In the Algarve, sardines are the currency. Some of the richest fishing spots can be found along this coast supporting the many authentic fishing villages that still thrive here. Grilled to perfection, they’re traditionally served with buttery potatoes, garlic carrots, and zesty chickpeas. Of course, some chips never go amiss on a dish like this. In summer, enjoy the Sardine Festival, where towns and cities set up public grills along their waterfronts, serving you the freshest catches in a vibrant atmosphere.
