Embark on this unforgettable journey where every castle tells a story – this is your guide to some of Spain’s most remarkable castles found in Extremadura.

Castles of Western Spain

Castillo de Trujillo

Sitting at the highest point of Trujillo, the Castle of Trujillo demands to be seen. This impressive stone structure is of 10th-century Islamic origin and was later strengthened by the Christian community. Castillo, the Spanish word for castle derives from the Latin Castellum which means strong. This holds true for the Castle of Trujillo whose walls still stand strong withholding the test of time. Its square towers, typical of Islamic military architecture, offer spectacular views over the town of Trujillo. Trujillo itself is a beautiful settlement with cobbled streets, making it an ideal lunch spot after your castle visit.
