Emilia Romagna wine region: Romanesque cities

Emilia Romagna’s cities are considered to be amongst some of the prettiest cities in Italy and they have intricate and fascinating histories to match. The capital of the region is Bologna, here you can find wonderous historical architecture such as the iconic Due Torri and the University of Bologna, the oldest university in the world.

Emilia Romagna wine region: Torrechiara Castle

Pedalling through Emilia Romagna will also take you to other marvellous cities such as Parma, Modena and Reggio Emilia; all home to architectural masterpieces. One that must be visited before you leave Parma is the breathtaking castle of Torrechiara, this magical fortress dominates the Val Parma and is a great place to stop and enjoy the view.

Emilia Romagna wine region: Grapes

The region’s provinces produce many different types of wine. On your travels, look out for sparkling wines such as Lambrusco, excellent white wines like Albana and deep ruby-red wines such as Sangiovese, perfect with tomato-based dishes.

Emilia Romagna wine region: Bolognese

Emilia Romagna is famous worldwide for its cuisine and it has invented many popular dishes and foods. During your time in Bologna, try the ragù Bolognese, the famous Bolognese sauce originates from here and is served with tagliatelle, not spaghetti.

Emilia Romagna wine region: Parmigiano Reggiano cheese

The celebrated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and Balsamic vinegar are also made in the region and there are many opportunities to sample the produce in the factories around the area. Emilia Romagna is also famous for its meat products such as prosciutto, pancetta and capocollo.
